All resources have been selected by me and are shaped by my experience and knowledge, but I&#8217;ve tried to stick to the free resources accessible by everyone. I would be happy to add anything you would like to recommend &#8211; use the form at the bottom to send it on to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you are looking to\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2026 read more about global mental health:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are new to the field and want to get an idea of the scope of the scientific field, you may want to start with the Lancet series of articles on global mental health [free registration may be required]. You can sign up to the newsletter of the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalmentalhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Movement for Global Mental Health<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;for general advocacy, services and partnership news, and check out the website of the related <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centreforglobalmentalhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Global Mental Health<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;for research and events news. A great source for news, research, ongoing projects, and resources is the knowledge hub of the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mhinnovation.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mental Health Innovation Network<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; you can connect to researchers and practitioners, browse the forum, follow vacancies and find links to organizations working in the field of mental health from all over. Look out also for the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/unitedgmh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>United for Global Mental Health<\/strong><\/a> organization, which has been active in the UN General Assembly and started the Speak Your Mind campaign. A UK Global Mental Health ministerial summit in 2018 produced <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mhinnovation.net\/sites\/default\/files\/downloads\/resource\/global-declaration-on-achieving-equality-for-mental-health-5bbdd2bd853bc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>this declaration<\/strong><\/a>, and a 2019 summit held in Amsterdam <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.government.nl\/ministries\/ministry-of-foreign-affairs\/events\/mental-health-and-psychosocial-support-in-crisis-situations\" target=\"_blank\">advanced the visibility<\/a><\/strong> of mental health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2026 get an education in global mental health:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are looking for a Master programme, choosing may be difficult. I can recommend from personal experience the joint <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centreforglobalmentalhealth.org\/training-courses\/global-mental-health-msc\" target=\"_blank\">MSc in Global Mental Health<\/a> <\/strong>run by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and King&#8217;s College London &#8211; the degree takes place in London, <strong>UK<\/strong>. Another strong contender is the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/taught\/globalmentalhealth\/\" target=\"_blank\">MSc in Global Mental Health<\/a><\/strong> run by the University of Glasgow, which takes place in Glasgow, <strong>Scotland<\/strong>. University of Edinburgh, <strong>Scotland<\/strong>, has a recently-launched (as of 2020) <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/studying\/postgraduate\/degrees\/index.php?r=site%2Fview&amp;edition=2020&amp;id=991&amp;utm_source=Findamasters&amp;utm_medium=programme&amp;utm_campaign=ExternalListings&amp;utm_content=WebsiteURL\" target=\"_blank\">MSc in Global Mental Health and Society<\/a><\/strong>. Usually such degrees can be studied full-time for 1 year or part-time for 2 years. Queen Mary University of London has MSc courses in topics such as <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/taught\/coursefinder\/courses\/public-mental-health-msc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public Mental Health<\/a><\/strong> and also <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/taught\/coursefinder\/courses\/168690.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mental Health: Cultural and Global Perspectives in Mental Health Care<\/a><\/strong>, available also as a distance learning option. The Lisbon Institute of Global Mental Health in <strong>Portugal<\/strong> has an <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lisboninstitutegmh.org\/training#toc-4\" target=\"_blank\">International Master in Mental Health Policy and Services<\/a><\/strong> programme. There are universities which offer global mental health courses as part of their curriculum (usually housed in departments or institutes of global health); one example is Columbia University in the US, whose Global Mental Health Program runs <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cugmhp.org\/education-training\/masters-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Master programmes<\/a><\/strong>. Other examples in the <strong>US<\/strong> are<strong> <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/aims.uw.edu\/uw-program-global-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\">University of Washington&#8217;s Global Mental Health Program<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/psychiatry\/globalmentalhealth\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mental Health Program run by Yale<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp; Harvard University has the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/globalhealth.harvard.edu\/mentalhealth\" target=\"_blank\">GMH@Harvard<\/a><\/strong> initiative, which also has interesting events, occasional fellowships and the <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/hprt-cambridge.org\/education\/gmh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mental Health: Trauma and Recovery Certificate Program<\/a><\/strong>. John Hopkins University runs its own <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jhsph.edu\/research\/centers-and-institutes\/global-mental-health\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Global Mental Health<\/strong><\/a> research programme, and William James College in Boston has a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.williamjames.edu\/academics\/centers-of-excellence\/multicultural-and-global-mental-health\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Center of Excellence for Multicultural and Global Mental Health<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp; In <strong>Canada<\/strong>, McGill University has a <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/gmh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mental Health program<\/a><\/strong> of research and training, which stresses more on transcultural psychiatry and offers an interesting string of events, while recently the University of Toronto has started to develop their own <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.utoronto.ca\/global-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Mental Health<\/a><\/strong> program. In <strong>Australia<\/strong>, the University of Melbourne has a <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mspgh.unimelb.edu.au\/research-groups\/centre-for-mental-health\/global-and-cultural-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\">Global and Cultural Mental Health Unit<\/a><\/strong> which works to improve mental health care in low-resource settings. In <strong>Norway<\/strong>, University of Bergen has started a <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uib.no\/en\/rg\/gmh\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mental Health Research Group <\/a><\/strong>where academics work on projects related to improving mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case you want to undertake a PhD in global mental health, you may want to start by thinking about the topic you would like to engage with. You can easily find researchers working in the area through their publications and institutional affiliations. Projects in global mental health offer a great opportunity to conduct original research, and there is sometimes additional funding for a studentship along the bigger projects. Contact the researchers whose work you are interested in and follow your favourite projects. Research in global mental health is carried out in more institutions than I can list here and in many different disciplines &#8211; there is plenty of space for creating your own original contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2026 work in global mental health as a clinician\/practitioner\/field worker:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out my newsletter, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gmhunboxed.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Mental Health Unboxed<\/a><\/strong>, for job vacancies. There are several avenues for such work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the non-governmental\/not-for-profit sector, there are several prominent organizations which do a lot of work in the area of global mental health. Some of them are, in no particular order, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mental Health Foundation<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.basicneeds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>BasicNeeds International<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mqmentalhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> MQ<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warchild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>War Child<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CBM<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wellcome Trust<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>World Vision<\/strong><\/a>. Many of them advertise on their own websites or through social media accounts. The jobs may range from campaign organizer, scientific researcher, fundraiser, policy researcher and writer, mediator, analyst, coordinator of activities, manager of project and programme portfolios to simple administrative duties which may give you a way into the world of global mental health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the group of internationally active charities, main recruiters of mental health specialists are the <a href=\"https:\/\/internationalmedicalcorps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Medical Corps<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Medecins Sans Frontieres<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Rescue Committee<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actioncontrelafaim.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Action Contre la Faim<\/strong><\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> International Committee of the Red Cross<\/strong><\/a> and others. These jobs may be more oriented towards mental health in conflicts, disasters and with vulnerable populations, and they can be in the field or at a consultant or manager level. It&#8217;s a good idea to check out the forums of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhpss.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MHPSS.net<\/strong><\/a> (the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support network) and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhinnovation.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health Innovation Network<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for job postings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many other organizations which are active on regional or country level have openings for mental health staff, and the number of openings is expected to grow. If you are interested in a particular region, get to know the organizations working there and connect with them. Again, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhinnovation.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MHIN<\/strong> <\/a>is a good place to start. Do your own research as well &#8211; you can find plenty of volunteer opportunities to suit your level of experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember, your expertise will be wider and more valuable if you already have some experience in mental health. This can be in your own country or other setting, including a high-income country. From my own experience I know, and I&#8217;ve been assured by psychiatrists I trust, that &#8216;People are the same everywhere.&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2026 work in global mental health as a researcher:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out my newsletter, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gmhunboxed.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Mental Health Unboxed<\/a><\/strong>, for job vacancies. Keep an eye on the  universities listed above with substantial commitment to global mental health research, such as King&#8217;s College London, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of Colombia, the University of Glasgow and others. For transcultural mental health research, McGill University in Canada seems to be one of the best. But don&#8217;t be limited by these only &#8211; research programmes are run by universities in low- and middle-income countries, as well as high-income countries.
